Is Online Hypnotherapy as Effective as In-Person Sessions?

"Does hypnotherapy actually work over a video call, the same way it would in a room together?"

It's one of the questions I get asked most often.

It's a fair question. Hypnosis can feel like something that needs a quiet room, a comfortable chair, and someone sitting right across from you. So let's look at what's actually true — and what the experience is really like once you try it.

Hypnosis Happens in Your Mind, Not in a Room

Hypnotherapy isn't something that's "done to you" by a therapist in the same physical space. It's a state of deep focus that you create yourself, guided by someone else's voice. Your brain doesn't know — or care — whether that voice is coming from across the room or through a screen.

What actually matters for hypnosis to work is:

  • A calm, focused state of mind

  • Trust in the person guiding you

  • A safe, comfortable environment

  • Clear, well-paced guidance

None of these require being physically in the same room. In fact, for most people, online sessions make at least two of them easier.

What the Evidence Says

Scientists and therapists have been studying this question since online therapy took off — and the results are reassuring.

In 2021, researchers reviewed 57 separate studies comparing video-call therapy to in-person therapy (Clinical Psychology Review, 2021). Their conclusion? The results were equivalent. It didn't matter that there was a screen between the therapist and the client — the outcomes were the same.

A large real-world study from Sweden tracked 2,300 patients over six years — three years before the pandemic and three years during it, when sessions moved online almost overnight. When nearly half of all visits shifted to online delivery, treatment outcomes did not decline — they remained stable across conditions including anxiety, stress, and trauma.

For hypnotherapy specifically, research confirms that remote hypnotherapy is increasingly being used internationally, with around two-thirds of clinicians reporting that they now deliver hypnotherapy via online platforms — and findings support its effectiveness in this format. A 2025 continuing education programme at The Chicago School reviewed multiple studies on online hypnosis and concluded that online hypnotizability scales are a viable and effective alternative to traditional, in-person approaches — meaning people reach the same depth of focused state online as they would in a therapy room.

What all of this tells us is simple: it's the quality of the connection and the method that matter — not where you're sitting when the session happens.

This matches exactly what I see in my own practice. Clients working with me online for anxiety, stress, confidence, or smoking reach the same depth of relaxation, the same meaningful breakthroughs, and the same lasting change as anyone would expect from a face-to-face session.

The Advantages Online Sessions Actually Have

Beyond simply "being just as good," online hypnotherapy comes with a few real advantages:

  • You're in your own environment. Many clients drop into a deeper, more relaxed state at home than they would in an unfamiliar office — because home already feels safe.

  • No travel, no waiting room anxiety. You go straight from your everyday life into the session, and straight back afterwards. For people managing anxiety, removing the stress of travel and waiting rooms can actually support the work, not detract from it.

  • Access to the right therapist, not just the nearest one. This matters especially if you're looking for someone who works in your first language. If you're Polish and living in Ireland, for example, finding a hypnotherapist who works fluently in Polish nearby can be close to impossible — but online, that's no longer a barrier.

  • Consistency. Recordings, follow-up resources, and self-hypnosis audios are easy to share and revisit between sessions — extending the work beyond the hour we spend together.

What You Need for a Good Online Session

A few simple things help an online session work well. All you need is a quiet, comfortable space where you won't be interrupted for the duration of the session. If possible, use headphones, as they create a more immersive and relaxing experience. Make sure you have a stable internet connection and choose a comfortable chair or a place to lie down where you can fully relax. That's genuinely all you needno special equipment and no clinic visit required.

So, Is It as Effective?

The answer is yes — online hypnotherapy is just as effective as in-person sessions, and for many people, it removes barriers that were stopping them from getting support at all. If you've been putting off getting help because there's no hypnotherapist nearby who works the way you need, or in the language you feel most comfortable in, online sessions might be exactly the solution you've been looking for.
